Begin Flight On Carrier?

Post by Firecapt32 » Thu Jun 30, 2016 2:04 pm

Does anyone know a way to begin a flight on the carrier deck using AI Carriers?

Only FSX@War and FSX mission carriers can do that.

Jon,
Do you think it would be possible to slew the F-4J/S to the deck then start from there?

You can use the RFN Carrier Gauge to spawn on an AI Carrier. Here is the website. I use it alot.
When you get to the site scroll down a bit until you find RFN Carrier Gauge. Have Fun!

I don't see why not.

The RFN TACAN guage can spawn you on your AI Carrier but you must make sure you have
the correct Tacan frequency dialed in. Not everyone is aware of this feature just trying to
put out the info and make those aware of the availability of this freeware add-on.
Must Military pilots would want to start from the carreir. So this is a good add-on.

Does the TACAN Gauge assign a frequency to the carrier or does the AI carrier already have that coded into it? I use AI CARRIERS V2 with the Nimitz and another carrier. Is there a way to find that out?

When you deploy the carrier you need to know it's Tacan Frequency otherwise the RFN TACAN Gauge will not pick it up.
Check the AI Carrier frequencies first. without the tacan frq you cannot spawn to the carrier.

For those who want a "more permanent solution there is Flight Simulator X - Boat Traffic Compiler. (http://lc0277.gratisim.fr/boat/) Basically a way to add AI carriers (and escorts) anyway you want them. Because you make the schedule you know where the carrier is…or can figure it out with a little math. Set it up. Slew our aircraft to the carrier, and plop it down on deck. Exit slew but ket it paused, then save the flight. You will need to edit the .FLT file. Change the "Starts on Ground" line to "False"…and I usually add about 2 ft in elevation to make sure it doesn't fall through the flight deck.

A bit of a learning curve but once you get the hang of it, I think it provides more realistic simulation of carrier aviation, i.e. the carrier doesn't just "show up" where you want it…that like never happens…after two carrier tours I can attest to that.

If you have Tacpack and with its features you can designate a specific location and speed of the carrier and direction and assign any tacan frequency
as desired. And fly out to it. No math involved lol just use your FSX Map and choose the location or input your coordianates. HAVE FUN with the carrier ops. :D

Having served on USN carriers the various "spawn" schemes just don't do it for me. Carrier ops are a bit more complicated than lat/long heading and speed.

A carrier's heading during flight ops is dependent on several factors - local wind, the evolution underway (launching or recovering) and geography…sometimes we operate around islands or near coasts. You want the relative wind head straight ahead when launching from the bow cats but "down the angle" when recovering…and many times you can't get either. "Mothers in a turn" is not something a naval aviator likes to hear as they are getting ready to come back aboard.

So not a big fan of spawning carriers-much rather a true AI carrier that follows a logical track. Unfortunately, it seems that the Milviz aircraft only recognize a spawned carrier TACAN…which leaves you with no way besides dead reckoning for finding your way back to the boat. :(

I think FSX@War can do TP carrier tracks.

CCP perhaps - I'll have to check. The basic FSX@War just does "static". (I'm an external developer for FSX@War)

May I take from your answer that TACPACK's carrier TACAN function does not work with traditional carrier AI traffic.

Not really a complaint if that's the case…well, a small bit of puling…just want to know to make are I'm not doing something wrong and so I can move on and explore different methods…as you mentioned, perhaps CCP is my answer. :)

Cheers!

Correct. Only TACPACK carriers are used.

Yep - sitting on the flight deck of a CCP carrier - generic Acceleration Carrier - tuned 47X - nada - spawned a TACPACK carrier and the TACAN came right up…
…which brings me to my next question: Why am I bothering you fine folks, when this is a TACPACK issue? Off to the VRS forum I go! :)

UPDATE: I did some experimenting with aircraft designed to use TACPACK produced by commercial developers - which ones can see a normal AI Carrier's TACAN and which cannot.

Tested & Result:
VRS FA-18E Superbug - No
Milviz F-4E - No
Aerosoft F-14 - Yes
Razbam A-7 (Beta) - No

The fact that VRS's own aircraft is subject to this limitation makes me think it is on purpose. How did Aerosoft get around it? I haven't the foggiest idea.
