Tacan not working on F4 E, J,S

Post by car767 » Sun Aug 04, 2019 9:38 am

Hi, I recently flew a nav exercise using tacan in the T38C and it worked as expected. DME worked and the bearing indicator pointed to the tacan channel selected. I repeated the same exercise in the F4 and the bearing indicator didn’t move, it just pointed South despite the required direction being Northerly. The dme did work.I have rechecked all the switch positions and happy things are set correctly. Is there something in the rear cockpit I need to set?
I am assuming tacan on the F4 is modelled.I tried all the F4 variants and got the same result.
Any help appreciated.
Cheers
Colin

I would need to see a screenshot of your panel showing the TACAN radios, and the bearing pointer/HSI controls.

The T-38C uses an entirely different approach to the Phantoms. The Phantoms still use the old FS NAV1 radio with where we convert TACAN channels to NAV frequencies using the paired frequency rule. The T-38C uses an entirely custom TACAN database from Navigraph with our own internal TACAN simulation.

Hi,
Thanks for reply. Tacan panel on RH console set to t/r with channel set in the small window. ,front panel has toggle switch fully down and rotary knob set to tacan.HSI has red indicator lit showing tacan. Hope that helps, not sure how to take screen shot. Didn’t know the T38 used a different system to the Phantoms.
Cheers

To take a screenshot, press the V key in P3D, or press Print Screen, and then go to Paint or some other image editor and press Ctrl + V. Save and upload.

You sure it is picking up the right station? You tried turning the audio up to listen to the Morse? And if you fly in the opposite direction to the bearing pointer, does the dme decrease and the bearing pointer swing around when you cross the station?

Thanks for your post and advice. I flew from EGYM ( Marham) towards Waddington using tacan frequency 118x. The bearing pointer indicated South even though the required heading was Northerly. The DME decreased until overhead Waddington then started to increase as I flew away from it as expected. The bearing pointer didn’t swing round as I overflew the airfield as you would expect. I couldn’t get the tacan volume button to move so couldn’t listen to the morse audio, sorry. DME is working ok but the bearing pointer seems fixed pointing South.Hope this helps.

Just checked and unfortunately P3D doesn't treat the WAD TACAN as a VOR-DME, but as a DME only. So you won't get bearing information from it.

I would have to redo the F-4's TACAN system to use the T-38C's system in order for it to work. No promises there. However all our new jets, and some upcoming updates like our PBR T-38A will use the new TACAN system.

Thanks for looking into this. I normally fly in vr so tacan is a useful and easy way to navigate without removing the headset. The F4 and T38 are amazing in vr. Thought I was doing something wrong but if it is a limitation of the sim then that’s the way it is.
Will look forward to a possible future update.
