Maybe I'm missing something, but I can't seem to get the autopilot to follow the route I have set up in the GPS. I have it set to VOR/LOC but the plane wants to go north for some reason. The little green VOR/LOC light is illuminated but the plane won't follow the routing I set for it.

I also can't seem to get the plane to follow the HDG indicator. I turned off VOR/LOC and turned HDG to on but the plane doesn't respond

The Sperry 77 autopilot does not do GPS at all. Heading control has three positions:

3. Heading Switch
OFF - heading is off, autopilot is only controlled by CWS.
Middle Position - Autopilot will maintain current heading.
HDG SEL - Autopilot will be driven by HDG bug on captains HSI. HDG SEL will revert
automatically to the middle position if either AIL or ELV AP channels are turned OFF.
